RECAP
While fanservice is a word that is used more frequently over the years, it has different implications depending on context and different media formats. In recent years fanservice has obtained various meanings and is not as straightforward as it used to be.
In anime it is primarily a visual concept. This can be expressed through, for example, the character's clothing or actions. Furthermore, entire episodes are made for the pleasure of the viewers as well. Additionally, a clear distinction between two types of fanservice characters can be made. The first category are characters that are meant to give fanservice, whereas the second category exists of characters that give the viewer a chance to receive it. So, although fanservice in anime has always been mainly a visual concept, nowadays there are more ways to express it.
For the idols, there isn’t one specific way that fanservice is expressed, although it is mostly noted through performances. There is a clear difference between 2 types of idols, which also has influence on the way fanservice is shown. There are the more popular or mainstream idols represented by a company and the underground idols who work independently. Fanservice is not only brought to fans through media but also through special performances and organized events, such as akushukai and hanashikai. These events can be called oshikatsu, a term used by fans meaning to support their favorite oshi’s activities. It was clearly noticed that after covid-19 there has been a big boom in oshikatsu supporting activities, which has been recognized on an economic level as well as a positive impact on people’s mental health.
